News Zak Berkman Will Exit NYC's Epic Theatre for Philly's People's Light & Theatre Company Zak Berkman, executive director of artistic programming and one of the co-founders of New York's Obie Award-winning Epic Theatre Ensemble, will leave the company in September to become the associate artistic director of People's Light & Theatre Company in Pennsylvania, Epic announced Feb. 10.

Berkman will remain with Epic until September, working with co-founders Melissa Friedman, Ron Russell and James Wallert to assist in overseeing a leadership transition and with current programming. Prior to co-founding Epic, Berkman worked as associate producer to Broadway producer Margo Lion and worked in play development at Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Stage & Film, and other theatres. Epic produced the world premiere of his play, Beauty on the Vine, and its screenplay adaptation. Berkman has also written the play The Harassment of Iris Malloy and worked as a script writer for NBC's "Days of Our Lives." He has co-adapted Antigone and The Visit for the company's "Journeys Series," presented in New York City public schools as part of Epic's Arts-in-Education programs.

Epic has developed and produced the Off-Broadway premieres of numerous plays during Berkman's time at the company, including Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play, Nilaja Sun's No Child..., Judith Thompson's Palace of the End and Kate Fodor's Hannah and Martin, as well as an acclaimed revival of JB Priestley's Time and the Conways. The theatre has also implemented Shakespeare Remix, an after-school youth development program in which students put on a play by William Shakespeare over a three-month process. Shakespeare Remix: Measure 4 Measure, featuring Chelsea High School students, will perform at 52nd Street's Five Angels Theatre Feb. 10-12. Visit epictheatreensemble.org for times and reservations.

People's Light & Theatre Company has produced 384 productions in 36 years, 150 of which have been world or regional premieres. Upcoming world premieres include Kenneth Lin's Fallow and Bruce Graham's Mr. Hart and Mr. Brown. The theatre is also active in arts education through the Arts Discovery suite of programs.
