The Universal Theatre in Melbourne, Australia is presenting Meats. Written by Nick Meehanan who also wrote and is performing this hilarious and slightly perverse play about Stan: butcher and philosopher.

Nick, an ex-butcher, is seen as Stan waiting for the arrival of his unreliable apprentice and recounts episodes from his past. He resurrects the butcher shop of his golden days -- complete with 16 robust butchers all dancing in a surrealistic chorus line.

We meet his regulars, Mrs. Shorthorn, Mr. Hereford, and old Pete the wino who uses unsavoury tactics to get free bacon for breakfast.

Stan's hilarious exploits with lady customers including a tender affair with a prostitute, reveal the delightfully cheeky nature of this unique Australian character and his incorrigible instinct to perform.

Venue: Universal theatre 19 Victoria St. Fitzroy. Season: Sept. 2 - Oct. 5. Bookings: 9419 3777 or BASS. -- By Peter Kemp
