News A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Side Show and More Honored at San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Craig Noel Awards The San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Craig Noel Awards were held Feb. 10 at the Museum of Modern Art in San Diego, CA.

The Globe's world-premiere production of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, which is now playing on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre, received five awards: Outstanding New Musical, Direction of a Musical (Darko Tresnjak), Lead Performance in a Musical (Jefferson Mays), Orchestrations (Jonathan Tunick) and Scenic Design (Alexander Dodge).

The Old Globe's productions of The Merchant of Venice, Pygmalion and Other Desert Cities each received one award apiece, and Randall Dodge was named Actor of the Year for his body of work in 2013, which included his role in the Globe's 16th annual production of the holiday musical Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

A theatrical adaptation of Toni Morrison's novel "The Bluest Eye," a co-production of Moxie Theatre and Mo'olelo Performing Arts Company, was honored with Outstanding Dramatic Production, Outstanding Ensemble and Outstanding Direction of a Play (Delicia Turner Sonnenberg). 

In the Heights, which was produced with staff and students from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and presented by San Diego Repertory Theatre, was honored with Outstanding Resident Musical and for its choreography.

The Outstanding Special Event category recognized the San Diego Fringe Festival and La Jolla Playhouse's Without Walls Festival. La Jolla Playhouse's Side Show received awards for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical, Female, which was shared by Erin Davie and Emily Padgett, and costume design (Paul Tazewell). The Sound of Music, presented by San Diego Musical Theatre, received awards for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical, Female (Victoria Strong) and musical direction (Don LeMaster).

The San Diego Theatre Critics Circle is an organization of print and online theatre critics. Their annual awards for outstanding San Diego theatre are named for the late Craig Noel, founder and longtime artistic director of The Old Globe and a recipient of the National Medal of Arts for his contributions to American regional theatre in the 20th century.
