Performances continue for Pipeline Theatre Company's Playing Hot, a jazz concert-party-play co-written by Kevin Armento and C.A. Johnson. Set within a brassy dance hall, the play tracks the birth of jazz in New Orleans alongside the rise and fall of Buddy Bolden—the radical trumpeter who pioneered American jazz.
The world premiere, staged at Theater 511 Off-Broadway where it will open May 2, features a live brass band and direction by Jaki Bradley. Marcus Miller is music supervisor.
The company is made up of Linton Smith II as Buddy, along with Fernando Contreras, Danté Jeanfelix, Roi King, Emma Meltzer, Cristina Pitter, Monique St. Cyr, and Eric R. Williams.
