News A.C.T. Workshops Rivera's Brainpeople, Perloff Play and New Carrafa-Directed Musical San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater will present workshops and staged readings of works by José Rivera and Carey Perloff as well as a new musical from the Pittsburgh-based team of Christopher Dimond and Michael Kooman.

A.C.T. teams — for its second year — with the National Center for New Plays at Stanford University on the reading series, which is hosted by the latter at the Campbell Recital Hall in the Braun Music Center, Aug. 17-19. New A.C.T. associate artistic director Pink Pasdar oversees the series.

The works that will be part of the series include Brainpeople by Rivera — which will be seen in a full staging at A.C.T. (Jan. 31-Feb. 16, 2008) — as well as Higher by A.C.T. artistic director Perloff and Dani Girl by Dimond and Kooman.

The series line-up follows (further casting to be announced):

  • Aug. 17: Brainpeople by José Rivera, directed by Erica Gould
    Billed as "a dark fantasy," the work "exposes the desperation of three women as they cope with isolation and violence in an apocalyptic future." Cast members will include Rebecca Wisocky and Sona Tatoyan.

  • Aug. 18: Higher by Carey Perloff
    "Two ambitious architects, both competing for an historic commission in the Holy Land, struggle to make room for the emotional and the sacred in their lives." The cast features Dennis Boutsikaris.
  • Aug. 19: Dani Girl by Christopher Dimond and Michael Kooman
    John Carrafa (Urinetown, Good Vibrations) directs this "musical tragicomedy that follows a seven-year-old leukemia patient on a journey through her imagination." Casting features Cindy Goldfield and A.C.T. veteran Jack Willis. Tickets (to individual readings or passes for all) can be purchased by calling A.C.T. at (415) 749-2228.
