News Andrew Lloyd Webber Reveals Possible Subject for Next Musical Andrew Lloyd Webber has revealed one of the subjects he is considering for his next musical: the Profumo affair that famously rocked British politics in the early 60's when John Profumo, the UK's Minister of State for war, was revealed to have been having an affair with Christine Keeler, who was the reputed mistress of an alleged Russian spy.

One of the central figures in the Profumo affair was Stephen Ward, an osteopath who had introduced Keeler to Profumo, and was charged with living off the profits of prostitution after the case. In an interview on BBC Radio 2 with Chris Evans, Lloyd Webber stated, "I'm looking for a subject at the moment and I think I've found one … Stephen Ward really intrigues me and was a fantastically interesting character." Lloyd Webber went on to describe him as "the most popular man in London who ended up with absolutely nobody after the trial. I kind of think he was a fall guy. A very interesting guy."

As The Guardian points out, if he were to go ahead with the project this would not be the first time the story had been musicalized. Three years ago A Model Girl, a musical on the same subject, was staged at the Greenwich Theatre and starred Emma Williams as Keeler. More recently, a play entitled Keeler toured regionally that was scripted by Gill Adams and starred Paul Nicholas Stephen Ward and Alice Coulthard as Christine.

Lloyd Webber will be represented on Broadway this season with the long-running The Phantom of the Opera as well as revivals of Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.
