Screenwriter Brad Inglesby ("Out of the Furnace") wrote the script with Hathaway in mind for the lead role, who read it and became attached. Set in a small, blue-collar town in Pennsylvania, the film follows the mother's trials and tribulations over a period of 11 years.
Scott Free, Ridley Scott, Michael Schaefer and Michael Pruss are set to produce.
As previously reported on Playbill.com, Hathaway will star in the award-winning one-woman play Grounded by George Brant. Directed by Julie Taymor at the Public Theater in April, the play will mark the actress' return to Off-Broadway since 2009.
