Big Bang: STOMP Hits 5,000 Performance Off-Broadway Jan. 21

Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas created the wordless (and thus, universal) Stomp, the show about banging everything from Zippo lighters to brooms to plungers to hubcaps. It opened in New York City Feb. 27, 1994 and continues to run. The show has spawned international tours and regional productions (currently performing in London's West End and on North American, European and Asian tours), an Academy Award-nominated short, the Emmy Award-winning HBO special "Stomp Out Loud," numerous television appearances as well as an IMAX film called "Pulse."

Among the accolades Stomp has garnered are an Olivier Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award for Unique Theatrical Experience and an Obie Award.

At the decade mark in 2004, loosely calculated from all STOMP companies worldwide, the show had gone through:

7,800 pairs of drumsticks

5,300 wooden poles

1,800 British-made small garbage cans

2,500 British-made large garbage cans

5,500 American made garbage cans

14,000 boxes of Swan Vesta matches

1,800 gallons of black paint

8,000 pairs of earplugs The current record holder for longest Off-Broadway run, The Fantasticks with 17,162 performances, looks to maintain its position in the annals of theatre history for some time.
