Tiago Klimeck was portraying Judas, the biblical figure who betrayed Christ and later committed suicide, in the public performances that took place in a city square in Sao Paulo on April 6.

The 27-year-old actor was unconscious for four minutes before his fellow cast members realized what had occurred. Klimeck remained in an induced coma in the weeks following his injury.

A similar event occurred in 2000, when Italian actor Renato Di Paolo also died due to an accidental hanging while portraying Judas.

The final days of Christ are currently depicted on Broadway in the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Josh Young portrays Judas in the production, which utilizes a dummy for the hanging scene.
