Even Ben Elton and Queen need good publicity. The news that Queen's pop anthem "Bohemian Rhapsody" has won a nationwide poll — conducted by the Guinness World Records British Hit Singles — as best pop single of all time, comes just prior to the World Premiere on May 14 of the Ben Elton/Queen rock musical We Will Rock You.
"Bohemian Rhapsody," with its surreal lyrics, Freddie Mercury's soaring, high-octane voice and searing music, will inevitably stop the show when it is played onstage at the Dominion Theatre, and its place at the top of the pop single poll proves its continued appeal.
The poll will also be good news for the producers of Mamma Mia! at the Prince Edward Theatre (Abba's "Dancing Queen" came in third) and Up For Grabs at Wyndham's, starring Madonna (who came in fourth with "Like A Prayer").
