His press representative, Harriet Sternberg, told the Associated Press that the "This Is Spinal Tap" star, who was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, is in stable condition with a broken leg.
Sternberg said that this is the "first time he will have ever missed a curtain in his entire life... His understudy has never gone on in 40-plus years."
When McKean, who plays Dick Jensen, William Russell's (Tony winner John Larroquette) campaign manager, will return to The Best Man has yet to be announced. On May 23, McKean's wife, actress Annette O'Toole, used her @JimmyJindo Twitter account to Tweet: "Thank you dear people for your love and support. @MJMcKean and I so appreciative. He is getting great care. Spirits are good. Grateful, we."
McKean has appeared on Broadway in Superior Donuts, The Homecoming, The Pajama Game, Hairspray, Accomplice and Off-Broadway in Second Hand Memory. His numerous screen appearances include "Laverne & Shirley," "Dream On," "This is Spinal Tap" (which he also co-wrote), "Clue," "Coneheads," "Best in Show," "A Mighty Wind," "For Your Consideration" and "Whatever Works." He earned an Academy Award nomination for co-authoring the song "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" for the 2003 film "A Mighty Wind."
