England's Shared Experience returns to the Brooklyn Academy of Music this winter to present its production of Charlotte Bronte's classic novel, Jane Eyre. The 25-year-old company made its U.S. debut last season with the critically acclaimed Anna Karenina.

Stage adaptations of towering works of literature are Shared Experience's bread and butter. In the past, the troupe has mounted versions of War and Peace and The Mill on the Floss. Those two works were co- directed by joint artistic director Polly Teale, who also adapted and directs Jane Eyre.

The cast of Jane Eyre includes Harriette Ashcroft, John Blackham, Penny Layden, Michael Matus, Hannah Miles, Sean Murray, Philip Rham and Octavia Walter. Some of the actors will play several roles.

In conjunction with the run of the play, BAMcinematek will present two film versions of Bronte's novel: the 1944 Robert Stevenson movie starring Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles (screened Feb. 11); and the recent 1996 rendition by Franco Zeffirelli featuring William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg (Feb. 10). A discussion with Teale, open to the public (tickets: $8) will be held on Feb. 9 at 6 PM.

Tickets to Jane Eyre range $20-$55. BAM is located at 30 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. For more information, call (718) 636-4100. -- By Robert Simonson
