The Center at West Park will present readings of John Leguizamo’s new play Our Hood, an adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, May 30–31 as part of the American Playwrights Series.

Aaron Gonzalez (Ghetto Klown, Motherf*cker With the Hat) will direct the readings of the new play, which transports audiences to the streets of 1990s Queens.

The cast will feature Luna Velez (Dexter), Ani Mesa (Superior), Trey Santiago-Hudson (The Walking Dead), Maria-Christina Oliveras (Hadestown), Jhulenty Delossantos (Uncoupled), Gary Perez (Fatal Attraction), Kim Ramirez (New Amsterdam), and Xavier Padin. TaTyana Smith is the stage manager.

Leguizamo received a 2018 Special Tony Award for Latin History for Morons, following his earlier success on Broadway in his solo shows Ghetto Klown, Sexaholix, and Freak (he earned Tony nominations for writing and starring in the latter), as well as Off-Broadway's Mambo Mouth and Spic-O-Rama. The stage and screen star was also part of the cast of the 2008 Broadway revival of American Buffalo.

The Center at West Park’s American Playwrights Series kicked off in fall 2023 with Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth starring Mark Ruffalo, Missy Yager, and Matt Damon. The program will continue with Stephen Adly GuirgisThe Motherf*cker With the Hat and Tony Kushner’s Budenbar.

The Center at West Park is a not-for-profit community performing arts center based in the West Park Presbyterian Church.
