CHICAGO -- The official groundbreaking for Goodman Theatre's new home will take place on Tuesday, April 28 at the site of the proposed new complex -- Dearborn Street between Lake and Randolph Streets in Chicago's North Loop. Mayor Richard M. Daley will turn the first shovel for what, in conjunction with the restored Oriental, Palace, and Chicago Theatres, is hoped will restore the North Loop to something like the theatrical glory days of the 1940s.
The New Goodman Theatre will share the historic site of the Garrick and Woods Theatres and their successors, the Harris and Selwyn Theatres. When it is completed in time to greet the new millennium, the two-theater venue will have cost $44 million, with the City of Chicago supplying $18.8 million to the project through its tax increment financing.
