News Cho's Piano Teacher, New Musical Slug Bearers and More Slated for Vineyard Season Julia Cho's The Piano Teacher, Ben Katchor and Mark Mulcahy's new musical The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island (or the Friends of Dr. Rushower) and new works by Adam Rapp and Tarell Alvin McCraney will fill Vineyard Theatre's upcoming season.

The Off-Broadway troupe has announced the productions to be featured in the 2007-2008 season, which includes two mainstage productions, two lab productions as well as developmental workshops and reunion readings. One mainstage show (slated for spring 2008), exact dates and further details are yet to be announced.

The 2007-2008 season (subject to change) follows:

Mainstage:

  • The Piano Teacher by Julia Cho (begins in October)
    The Off-Broadway premiere of the new play from the author of Durango. Kate Whoriskey (Fabulation) directs the work in which "Mrs. K. lives in a twilight world where she serves cookies and enjoys sweet memories of students past," as show notes reveal. "But a tugging darkness permeates just beyond her memory and the ghosts who haunt this lonely woman stand on the brink of making their way to light."

  • The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island (or the Friends of Dr. Rushower) by Ben Katchor and Mark Mulcahy (January 2008)
    Bob McGrath (Jennie Richee) directs the new musical featuring a libretto and drawings by Katchor and songs by composer Mulcahy. "The drawings of Ben Katchor — the acclaimed cartoonist and writer ('The Jew of New York,' 'Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer') — form the animated background for this darkly funny new musical, set in and around Manhattan and a tropical factory-island of exploited workers."     ("small-scale works-in-progress productions presented for members only, and not open for review by critics")

  • The Metal Children by Adam Rapp (Red Light Winter, Nocturne)
  • Wig Out! by Tarell Alvin McCraney (The Brothers Size — winner of Vineyard's Paula Vogel Playwriting Award) Developmental workshops

  • The Burnt Part Boys - a new musical by Mariana Elder (book), Chris Miller (music) and Nathan Tysen (lyrics)
  • An untitled work - by playwright/composer Polly Pen Continuing the celebration of Vineyard's 25th anniversary, the company will also present reunion readings of Polly Pen and Peggy Harmon's 1985 musical Goblin Market as well as Nicky Silver's 1994 play Raised in Captivity.
