Classic Arts News Claudio Abbado Made Honorary Lucerne Citizen Conductor Claudio Abbado was named an honorary citizen of Lucerne today by the city's mayor, Urs W. Studer.
The ceremony took place at Lucerne's town hall.

Abbado founded the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in 2003, assembling it with musicians from Europe's leading orchestras. The ensemble recently performed its third season at the Lucerne Festival, and will perform in Rome in October, Tokyo in fall 2006, and the United States on a tour in fall 2007.

He has also conducted the Berlin Philharmonic and Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Lucerne, and acted as a consultant for the construction of the KKL, Lucerne's concert hall.
