News Composition World Premiere in Hartford Will Feature Playwright Casting has been announced for the world premiere of Composition, Tim McCracken's new play about writing music.

TheaterWorks in Hartford, CT, will stage the play Jan. 26-March 11. Artistic director Steve Campo will direct playwright Timothy McCracken as Henry, Tommy Schrider as Curtis and Tara Falk as Alexandra.

According to TheaterWorks, "The setting is a somewhat barren New York apartment where two young composers scrape by on grant money as they search for inspiration. Of the two, one composer's career holds great promise, while the other's limitations are striking. But which is which? That question is surprisingly and resoundingly answered in Timothy McCracken's new play."

Opening is Feb. 2 at TheaterWorks' home at 233 Pearl Street in downtown Hartford.

Composition is Timothy McCracken's first full-length play. Under its previous title, ...there's the story, the play had a showcase production in New York City at the Blue Heron Arts Center in 2005, produced by Beacon Productions and directed by Christopher Grabowski. Additionally, the play was presented in workshop at Vassar College in 2004, as well as in readings by Florida Studio Theatre and TerraNova Theatre Collective. It was a finalist for Arielle Tepper's Summer Play Festival in New York City, as well as a semi-finalist for the Princess Grace Awards. McCracken's short play, A Patriot Act, was produced at the SoHo Playhouse in New York City by the Urban Rock Project for the 2004 International Fringe Festival.

The play "is set in the Hell's Kitchen apartment of Henry and his amusingly predictable friend Curtis," according to TheaterWorks. "Curtis is a prolific but uninspired composer, while Henry, despite previous triumphs, has become catatonically blocked. When Curtis' new girlfriend, Alexandra, enters the scene, Henry finds himself able to confront the memories that have inhibited his composition. Then, step by step, note by note, he finally arrives at a glorious conclusion." Set design is by Adrian W. Jones; costume design is by Camille Assaf; lighting design is by Marcus Doshi; sound design is by Daniel Baker; original music is by Randy Redd; production manager is Michael Lenaghan.
