Playwrights Horizons has announced that Tony and Emmy winner David Hyde Pierce, who is scheduled to return to Broadway in the Bette Midler revival of Hello, Dolly!, will lead the cast of Adam Bock’s A Life, directed by Anne Kauffman (Marjorie Prime).

The world-premiere production is set to begin previews September 30 with an official opening night set for October 24 at the company’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

Pierce will play Nate Martin in the new play, a hopelessly single man in the wake of another failed relationship. “When his most recent breakup, another in a lifelong string of ill-fated matches, casts him into a funk, he turns to the only source of wisdom he trusts: the stars,” state press notes. “Poring over astrological charts, he obsessively questions his past and his place in the cosmos. But in Adam Bock’s disarming new play, the answer he receives, when it comes, is shockingly obvious – and totally unpredictable.”

Additional casting and creative team will be announced at a later date. Bock’s plays include A Small Fire, The Drunken City, The Receptionist and The Thugs.

Single tickets will be available from August 29 and may be purchased online via PHnyc.org and Facebook.com, by phone at (212) 279-4200 and in person at the Ticket Central Box Office, 416 West 42nd Street, New York.
