Three Days of Rain, quickly becoming playwright Richard Greenberg's best-known and most-produced play, will wrap up a run at TheaterWorks in Hartford, CT, on Dec. 23. The staging started Nov. 16. Official opening was Nov. 23.
A spokesman for the show said the production was well received, earning good reviews. Many evening have sold out. An extension is impossible because of the holidays.
T. Scott Cunningham heads the cast of three. Cunningham recently wrapped up a run in Douglas Carter Beane's wistful comedy, Music from a Sparkling Planet, at Off-Broadway's Drama Dept. He previously acted in Beane's biggest hit, As Bees in Honey Drown, as well as The Country Club. Aside from his work in Beane's plays, Cunningham is well remembered for playing several rattled characters in Nicky Silver's Pterodactyls, Fit to Be Tied and The Eros Trilogy. Other New York credits include Design for Living at the Roundabout and New England at Manhattan Theatre Club.
Timothy Altmeyer and Gina Nagy co-star. The play is directed by TheaterWorks Associate Artistic Director, Rob Ruggiero.
Three Days of Rain is composed of two acts, both set in Manhattan, one taking place in the present day, the other a few decades earlier. The three performers first play three nearly middle-aged urbanites — a brother, a sister and their best friend, the children of two famed architect partners. Gathered together in an abandoned office, they endeavor to sort through the tortured legacy of their parents, a legacy which has left them divided and, in one case, unbalanced. The second act, set in the 1950s, has the actors play the two architects and one of their future wives. What transpired between them shows how little the characters of the first act knew their parents, as well as illustrating the impossibility of truly knowing one's history. The title refers to a mysterious entry in one of the father's old journal.
Three Days of Rain premiered Off-Broadway in 1997 at Manhattan Theatre Club. John Slattery and Paticia Clarkson starred. The work was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Next up at TheaterWorks is Becky Mode’s one-person comedy of high stakes and high string people in the New York restaurant business, Fully Committed. It will run Jan. 15-March 3. Harry Bouvy will play the harried receptionist.

Hartford's TheaterWorks inaugurated their newly-renovated space Jan. 28, 2000, with Terrence McNally's Master Class, starring Rosemary Prinz. TheaterWorks artistic director Steve Campo directed the play.

TheaterWorks spent nearly half a million dollars on bringing their downtown Hartford venue back in the "constructionist" style of the late 1920's (the theatre was built in 1927). Improvements include state-of the-art seating, risers and new lighting and sound equipment.
