Diana Bracho has been confirmed to portray the temperamental opera diva Maria Callas in the Mexican production of Terrence McNally's 1996 Tony Award-winning play Master Class. Bracho is a very well known theatre, TV and film Mexican actress. She recently played Blanche in a highly successful revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. The remaining cast has not been yet announced.
Master Class ran for more than 500 performances at the John Golden Theatre on Broadway and has been produced worldwide. Zoe Caldwell starred the original Broadway production and was later replaced by Patti LuPone and Dixie Carter, while Faye Dunaway portrayed Callas in the U.S. National Tour.
Directed by Francisco Franco, Master Class is scheduled to open February 1998, although no theatre has been announced yet. There were rumors that Class would open at the Teatro Helenico, but at this time the Helenico is housing the Mexican production of Yasmina Reza's international hit Art.
Designing Master Class are Laura Rode (sets) and Kete Cebral (costumes). The musical director will be Ma.Teresa Rodriguez.
Morris Gilbert is producing Master Class in Mexico. Gilbert produced the current hit-comedy Confesiones de Mujeres de 30, and is planning to co-produce the Mexican premiere production of Les Miserables, which is scheduled to open late 1998.
