The Miami premiere of Donald Margulies' Dinner With Friends will replace a planned revival of Brighton Beach Memoirs in February 2001, Coconut Grove Playhouse announced Sept. 26.
The Neil Simon revival was to be staged in association with Broadway producer Emanuel Azenberg, who was to move Brighton Beach to Broadway in April following Coconut Grove. The theatre said Azenberg scrapped those plans when director Jerry Zaks became unavailable for the project, and the Coconut Grove run dissolved with it. Originally, Coconut Grove and Azenberg were to have presented Brighton Beach and Broadway Bound in rep at the Miami venue and on Broadway, but that plan did not materialize.
The 2000 Pulitzer Prize-winning Dinner With Friends will play Miami Feb. 6-March 11, 2001.
No director or casting was announced for the rueful comedy about two couples facing middle age and shifting friendships when one couple divorces. The play is a huge hit at the Variety Arts Theatre.
Tickets will be $35-$45. Call (305) 442-4000 for information. -- By Kenneth Jones
