Aimed at preschoolers, Disney Junior's Ariel will follow a young Ariel as she discovers the Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica.

Disney Junior’s Ariel, a new animated series for preschoolers, has been greenlit by Disney Branded Television. Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, made the announcement June 13 during the Annecy International Film Festival in France.

Inspired by The Little Mermaid, the new series will follow a young Ariel and her friends as they learn to discover and appreciate the Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica. Throughout the series, the multicultural diversity of the Caribbean will be highlighted through music, food, festivals, fashion, language and folklore.

Art released for the upcoming series, which doesn't yet have a premiere date, features a young Ariel that appears to be modeled on Halle Bailey's ecstatically reviewed portrayal of the character in the recent live-action film version of the 1989 animated original.

“As we were developing Disney Junior’s Ariel, we knew that we wanted to create an atmosphere that was vibrant and magical and showcased our young Ariel’s imagination, which, like our preschool audience watching at home, is as big as the sea," said Alyssa Sapire, senior vice president of Development, Series and Strategy for Disney Junior.
