The original cast album of Alan Menken's and Tim Rice's King David oratorio is being offered for sale in at least one New York record store as of July 20, but its release elsewhere is uncertain.

A spokesperson for The Disney Store on West 42nd Street in New York said the album is being offered for sale only through mail order -- but the HMV store on Broadway at 72nd Street not only was offering the CD for sale, but had selections available for sampling at a listening kiosk.

The premiere of Disney's King David re-opened Broadway's refurbished New Amsterdam Theatre on formerly blighted 42nd Street. The production featured Marcus Lovett, Stephen Bogardus, Alice Ripley, Judy Kuhn and Martin Vidnovic, all of whom are heard on the recording.

The single-CD recording was made live at performances May 15-23.

Retail distribution seems uncertain, but the album can be ordered from Disney at (888) 937-7464. Via phone, the CD costs $17.98 plus $5.95 shipping and handling, plus local taxes. The phone operator would say only that the album is scheduled to ship before the end of July.
