Host Ryan Seacrest surprised the Top five finalists – Alex Preston, Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson, Sam Woolf and Jessica Meuse – on the May 1 broadcast of "Idol" with the option of either eliminating the lowest vote getter or rolling the vote over to next week, when two contestants would be eliminated. In an anonymous vote, the finalists did not unanimously agree to delay the elimination until next week; therefore, Woolf was eliminated after receiving the least amount of votes. From Bradenton, FL, the 18-year-old sang “Sing” and “How to Save a Life” on the recent performance show.
The competition will continue May 7 at 8 PM ET when the final four take to the stage in the “Love: Break-ups and Make-ups”-themed performance show. One contestant will be eliminated during the May 8 broadcast.
Former "American Idol" contestants who have taken to Broadway after their stint on "Idol" include Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple, After Midnight), Taylor Hicks (Grease), Clay Aiken (Spamalot), Constantine Maroulis (Jekyll and Hyde, Rock of Ages), Diana DeGarmo (Hairspray, Hair), Frenchie Davis (Rent) and Jordin Sparks (In the Heights) as well as former "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi (Chicago), among others.
