The Toronto premiere of William Finn's Elegies: A Song Cycle begins performances Feb. 15 at the Berkeley Street Upstairs Theatre.

Acting Up Stage Theatre Company presents the Finn song cycle, which will play through March 3. Directed by Lezlie Wade, the production features the talents of Thom Allison (national tour of Rent), Dora Award winner Barbara Barsky, Steven Gallagher (Toronto's Urinetown), Eliza-Jane Scott (Toronto's The Producers) and Shaw Festival regular Michael Strathmore.

The creative team for Elegies includes Wayne Gwillim (musical director), Sarah Melamed (set and costume designer) and Paul Major (lighting designer). Mitchell Marcus is the artistic producer.

Elegies celebrates life (and death) through the power of song. The song cycle was a hit at Lincoln Center Theater during its limited engagement in 2003. The original New York cast boasted Betty Buckley, Michael Rupert, Christian Borle, Carolee Carmello and Keith Byron Kirk. Among Finn's songs are "Looking Up Quintet," "Mister Choi & Madame G," "Mark's All-Male Thanksgiving," "Only One," "Joe Papp," "Peggy Hewitt & Mysty Del Giorno," "Passover," "Infinite Joy," "The Ballad of Jack Eric Williams (and Other 3 Named Composers)," "Monica & Mark," "Anytime (I Am There)," "My Dogs," "14 Dwight Ave., Natick, Massachusetts," "When the Earth Stopped Turning," "Goodbye," "Boom Boom" and "Looking Up."
