A new production of Claudio Monteverdi and Giovanni Francesco Busenello’s opera L’incoronazione di Poppea opened August 12 at the Salzburg Festival in Austria. Directed by Jan Lauwers, the staging continues through August 28.
The opera, based on ancient historical events, tells the story of Poppaea Sabina, mistress of Emperor Nero, who later became his second wife. Sonya Yoncheva stars as Poppea opposite Kate Lindsey as Nerone. William Christie conducts Les Arts Florissants.
