The Ragtime and Once This Island duo, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, will debut their latest work, an orchestral piece, "With Voices Raised" at the Boston Pops, May 5-16. Written for orchestra, mixed chorus, and speakers, "Voices" pays tribute to the generations of Americans who have raised their voices in the cause of freedom and equality -- with text excerpts from Walt Whitman's poetry and some of the most famous speeches given this century by John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Shirley Chisholm, and Dr. Martin Luther King. "Voices" was commissioned by The Boston Pops.
The world premiere performance will feature members of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, The Boston Pops Gospel Choir, and the Boston Gay Men's Choir. John Oliver will conduct.
