News   Fugard's People Are Living There, Freshly Set in New Jersey, Begins Limited Engagement June 8
A Specific Theatre Company's production of Athol Fugard's People Are Living There begins performances June 8 at the Peter Norton Space on West 42nd Street.

O'Mara Leary, Larry Silverberg, Ben Rauch and Emma Myles co-star in the Fugard work, which will play a limited run through July 24. Suzanne Shepherd directs the play, which premiered in 1971 at what is now the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. The official opening night at the Peter Norton is set for June 16.

People Are Living There is one of only two of Fugard's plays that does not deal with apartheid; with his permission, this work, which had originally been set in South Africa, now takes place in Elizabeth, NJ. The play, according to press notes, concerns Millie, "a feisty landlady of a sleazy boarding house, [who] is celebrating her 50th birthday. She is looking forward to a nice romantic evening at home until she finds out her lover has run off with a younger woman and she’s now stuck at home with her three downbeat lodgers. Even if it kills her, she is determined to celebrate and to have her revenge as she persuades her guests to join her for a Pinteresque birthday party none of them will ever forget."

The creative team for People Are Living There comprises Roger Mooney (set design), Beth Turomsha (lighting design) and Alexis Prussack (stage manager).

Athol Fugard is the author of Blood Knot, "MASTER HAROLD" ...and the boys, A Lesson From Aloes, The Island and Sizwe Banzi Is Dead. All five plays were nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. Fugard is also the author of "Cousins: A Memoir."

People Are Living There plays Tuesday-Saturday evenings at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM. Tickets, priced at $55, are available by calling (212) 279 4200 or by visiting www.ticketcentral.com. The Peter Norton Space is located in Manhattan at 555 West 42nd Street, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues.
