News Gimme a Banana!, a New "Samba Spectacular" About Carmen Miranda, Bows at Women's Voices Theater Festival Gimme a Band, Gimme a Banana!, a new "samba spectacular" about legendary fruit-hatted performer Carmen Miranda, is being presented by Pointless Theatre Co. at the Logan Fringe Arts Space in Washington DC as part of that city's Women's Voices Theater Festival.

Gimme a Band, Gimme a Banana! is written by Mel Bieler and Patti Kalil and co-directed by Roberta Alves and Matt Reckweg with musical direction by Patricia Vergara. It's scheduled to run through Nov. 14.

According to production notes, "Gimme a Band, Gimme a Banana! follows the story of iconic 1940’s Brazilian Bombshell, Carmen Miranda, through the sounds of samba and experimental multi-disciplinary theatre. This era of Hollywood glam and cultural commodification is examined through Carmen’s experiences as one of the first Latina performers to immigrate to the United States and become a household name. This samba puppet spectacle is narrated through Carmen’s songs, which introduced Brazilian culture to the rest of the world, consecrating the actress as a Hollywood’s legendary 'Lady in the Tutti Frutti Hat.'"

The cast of Gimme a Band, Gimme a Banana! includes Sharalys Silva as Carmen Miranda, Phillip Da Costa as Aloysio de Oliverio, Belén Oyola-Rebaza as Aurora Miranda, Scott Whalen as Lee Shubert/Jerry Lewis, Amanda Leigh Corbett as Baiana, Angeleaza Anderson as Flower Girl, Brendan O'Connell as Sebastian, Daniel Smeriglio as Dean Martin and Rebecca Ballinger.

Gimme a Band, Gimme a Banana! features fight direction by Lex Davis, costume design by Frank Labovitz assisted by Camille Patrillo, mask design by Nick Martin, lighting design by Max Doolittle and sound design by Michael Winch. Renee Nyack serves as stage manager.
