Also announced for the live television broadcast of the '50s-set musical is Carlos PenaVega ("Big Time Rush"), who will play the role of Kenickie.
About his casting Tveit told EW, "I’m thrilled and honored to be joining this incredibly talented team of actors in re-imagining this classic and beloved musical. Playing Danny Zuko is a dream role and I can’t wait to be a part of all the fun that comes along with performing live on television.”
The two actors join the previously announced Julianne Hough as Sandy; Vanessa Hudgens, who recently made her Broadway debut in Gigi, as Rizzo; and Keke Palmer as Marty Maraschino.
The broadcast, which is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2016, will feature an adaptation by Robert Cary and Jonathan Tolins.
The three-hour broadcast of Grease: Live will "reimagine" the popular musical, featuring the Warren Casey-Jim Jacobs songs from the 1972 stage production, in addition to "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "You're the One That I Want," which were written by John Farrar for the 1978 film.
The broadcast will be staged by Thomas Kail, a Tony nominee for In the Heights, who recently directed the Broadway-bound musical Hamilton.
Alex Rudzinski (“Dancing with the Stars”) will serve as the live broadcast director. Marc Platt (Wicked, Into the Woods) will be executive producer for the live performance that will be broadcast 7-10 PM (ET live/PT tape-delayed).
