The Sherwood Award, which comes with a $10,000 grant, honors and supports the innovative work of emerging theatre artists in the Los Angeles area. Half of the grant award must be used to foster a partnership with the honored artists and CTG. Garrett, currently pursuing his MFA in both producing and lighting design at CalArts, has been honored by CTG for his ecologically conscious stage design and execution. Garrett seeks to "reframe the ecological footprint of theatre to try and help remake American theatre as elementally as possible to help ensure its sustained future." He will use a portion of his grant to research and incorporate "green" production methods for CTG.
Center Theatre Group artistic director Michael Ritchie presented Garrett and the 2007 spring recipient, Ameenah Kaplan, the Sherwood Awards at Los Angeles' Stage Alliance Ovation Awards at the Orpheum Theatre on Nov. 12.
