Classic Arts News Gwyneth Jones to Host Birgit Nilsson Tribute May 23 Soprano Gwyneth Jones will host the Metropolitan Opera Guild's tribute to the legendary soprano Birgit Nilsson on May 23 at Avery Fisher Hall, the Guild announced.
Also on hand will be soprano Martina Arroyo, contralto Lili Choosaksian, mezzo-soprano Irene Dalis, mezzo-soprano Mignon Dunn, soprano Lauren Flanigan, baritone Thomas Stewart, manager Edgar Vincent, and other opera figures.

The event, titled "Birgit Nilsson: A Force of Nature," will include spoken tributes and film clips of Nilsson in performance.

Nilsson, who sang at the Met from 1959 to 1983, died on December 25, 2005, in her hometown in southern Sweden. She was 87. She sang 222 performances of 16 roles at the Met, winning acclaim for her interpretations of Wagner's Isolde and Br‹nnhilde, Puccini's Turandot, and Strauss's Elektra.
