News Holbrook's Mark Twain Tonight!, Frog & Toad and Betty Buckley to Launch New Balboa Theatre Hal Holbrook's Mark Twain Tonight! will launch the reopening of San Diego's historic Balboa Theatre. Tony winner Betty Buckley will also be featured in the restored venue's inaugural season.

Located in the heart of the city's Gaslamp Quarter, the 83-year-old theatre will reopen and return as a live performance site. The $26.5 million renovation and restoration was supported by the City’s Redevelopment Agency.

The new Balboa Theatre will serve as a home for local non-profit performing arts organizations and further arts education for local youth while presenting a wide variety of entertainment — including theatre, music, dance, and more — from across the country.

Some of the events scheduled follow:

  • Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight! (Jan. 19 - 8 PM)
    "Emmy and Tony award winner Hal Holbrook brings his tour de force portrayal of Mark Twain combining Twain's sardonic truisms and Holbrook’s impeccable comic timing," according to show notes.
  • St. Petersburg Ballet – Romeo & Juliet (Feb. 12 - 7:30 PM)
    "Artistic director Yuri Peukhov leads the St. Petersburg Ballet in telling Shakespeare's beautifully timeless love story."

  • A Year with Frog & Toad (March 9 - 11:30 AM & 3:30 PM)
    "This Tony nominated musical comes to the Balboa Theatre in this all-new production featuring the beloved Arnold Lobel children stories in this musical created for children of all ages."
  • Betty Buckley in Concert (May 10 - 8 PM)
    "Broadway vocalist Betty Buckley brings her unique style, voice, and charm to the Balboa Theatre with this program devoted to Broadway and selected standards."
