The series, which takes "a historical, theatrical and musical journey down America's iconic Broadway," will debut July 11 at 10 PM London time with a program titled "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught."
In the first episode Lumley, according to press notes, "examines how Broadway’s shows have responded to and mirrored changes in American society, adapting and thriving during political and cultural upheaval. From its roots in the immigrant community to the birth of the Civil Rights movement and the horror of 9/11, Broadway played its part in changing attitudes and breaking boundaries."
Interviewees include Hal Prince, Oscar Hammerstein III, Jim Dale, Joel Grey and directors Michael Mayer and Julie Taymor.
In a statement Lumley said, "I'm delighted to be making my BBC Radio 2 presenting debut on a subject so close to my heart. I adored my time on Broadway and there is nothing so romantic, so evocative and so full of human and theatrical drama as its history."
