Joe Dowling, former artistic director of Dublin's Abbey Theatre, officially takes charge of The Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis on Wednesday (June 19) with his first production there, The Cherry Orchard, starring Helen Carey. Dowling is the first Irishman to head the Guthrie since its late namesake, Tyrone Guthrie. He succeeds Garland Wright, who has gone East to direct Sigourney Weaver in Sex and Longing. The new (and reportedly "outrageous") comedy by Christopher Durang is to begin at Lincoln Center in mid-September.
