News Judith Ivey Lends an Ear to Vanities Musical May 21; Kritzer, Hilty, Stiles Sing Vanities, the new musical version of the popular Jack Heifner play, will get a private reading in Manhattan May 21 to test revisions and refinements.

This latest exploration of the property, which has libretto by Heifner and music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum, represents the first step taken with new director Judith Ivey, the Tony Award-winning actress who is becoming a sought-after director. The new draft has one new scene and three new songs.

Junkyard Dog Productions has optioned Vanities and is aiming it toward a commercial run in New York City in 2007-08.

The reading's trio of actresses playing the show's Texas cheerleaders, who evolve during the 1960s and '70s, will be Leslie Kritzer, Megan Hilty and Sarah Stiles. They created the roles in a California production in 2006, at TheaterWorks (and performed a National Alliance for Musical Theatre showcase of the piece in fall 2006).

Carmel Dean continues as musical director. This new reading is for the creative team.
