Classic Arts News L.A. Opera Plans Il Postino Opera Los Angeles Opera plans to premiere a new opera based on the novel Ardiente Paciencia in 2009, a spokesman for the company confirmed today.
Antonio Skšrmeta's 1985 novel, which grew out of an earlier radio play, stage play, and film, tells the story of a friendship between poet Pablo Neruda and a postman. It inspired the 1994 Italian film Il postino, which moved the action from Neruda's native Chile to Italy and was nominated for a best-picture Oscar.

The new Spanish-language opera, also called Il postino, will have music and libretto by Daniel Catšn, whose Salsipuedes debuted at Houston Grand Opera last year. Tenor Plšcido Domingo, general director of L.A. Opera, will play Neruda. Tenor Rolando Villaz‹n will be the postman.

The company's plans were first reported in the Los Angeles Times on July 23.
