To the dismay of preservationists, the renovations included the addition of two modernist towers with offices, dressing rooms, rehearsal space, and storage for sets. Carpeting and linoleum that had been put over the original marble floors was removed, and the auditorium was lined in silk and red velvet. Electronic screens were installed on the back of each seat for the display of subtitles.
According to the AP, music director Riccardo Muti led a 40-minute rehearsal at the opera house last week, and pronounced the renovations a success.
"It was very emotional to return to your home after a long absence and find it more splendid and welcoming than before," Muti said.
