News Legally Blonde Will Be Resident Show of Norwegian Cruise Liner The Tony Award-nominated musical Legally Blonde, based on the popular 2001 film, will set sail on Norwegian Cruise Lines' new liner Getaway in January 2014.

The 4,000-passenger Norwegian Getaway will sail a seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruise out of Miami. The 787-seat Getaway Theater will house Legally Blonde, as well as the ballroom dance spectacle Burn the Floor.

Legally Blonde has music and lyrics by both Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy: The Musical; Cam Jansen and the Curse of the Emerald Elephant; Sarah, Plain and Tall) and Nell Benjamin (Cam Jansen; Sarah, Plain and Tall; The Mice) and a book by Heather Hach (the film "Freaky Friday"). The original Broadway production was staged by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, Kinky Boots).

The Broadway production of Legally Blonde opened at the Palace Theatre April 29, 2007. It ended its run Oct. 19, 2008, after 30 previews and 595 regular performances. It was also filmed for a popular MTV broadcast. Legally Blonde's seven Tony nominations included Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Choreography (Mitchell) and Best Actress (for original star Laura Bell Bundy).

It was not announced whether the Norwegian Cruise Lines production would reflect a shortened version of the musical, or if it would replicate the work of Mitchell and the original Broadway creative team.

Condensed versions of Hairspray and Chicago have previously been featured on the Royal Caribbean line. The Broadway dance extravaganza Burn the Floor was twice extended in New York and has played international cities to acclaim. It featured direction and choreography by Jason Gilkison. Burn the Floor was created by producer Harley Medcalf and featured 32 champion ballroom dancers.
