News London's Hampstead Theatre to Premiere Wonderland, a New Play About U.K.'s 1980s Miners' Strike London's Hampstead Theatre is to offer the world premiere of Beth Steel's Wonderland to mark the 30th anniversary of the Miners' Strike that changed the fabric of Britain forever. It will begin performances June 20 prior to an official opening June 26, for a run through July 26.

According to press materials, the play, which was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Best New Play, presents the full sweep of the turbulent events that transformed the country  — from the corridors of Westminster, to pitched battles with the police, to the coal faces of Nottinghamshire.

It is set in the Midlands and London in 1984. In the Midlands, two young men are about to learn what it is to be a miner, to be accepted into the close camaraderie and initiated into a unique workplace where sweat, toil, collapsing roofs and explosions are all to be met with bawdy humor. In London, a conflicted Tory MP, a brash American CEO and an eccentric maverick are the face of a radical Conservative government preparing to do battle with the most powerful workforce, the miners. As the two sides clash, the miners fight for their livelihoods and families, and the government for its vision of a free Britain.

The play will be directed by Hampstead's artistic director Edward Hall, with lighting by Peter Mumford and sound by Matt McKenzie.

Casting is still to be announced.
