News London's Side by Side by Sondheim Revival Closes June 23 The London revival of Side by Side by Sondheim, a celebration of the works of Tony-winning composer Stephen Sondheim, ends its run at London's Venue Theatre June 23, three weeks earlier than originally announced.

Despite rave reviews, the revue struggled at the box office throughout its run. Originally scheduled to close July 14, the production now ends its run June 23.

Side by Side by Sondheim officially opened May 1 after previews that began April 26. The show played 4 previews and 62 regular performances.

Abbie Osman, Alasdair Harvey and Josie Walker co-star in Side by Side by Sondheim, which was produced by Melanie Herman and Neil Laidlaw. The show also featured a cast of rotating narrators, including Les Dennis, Christopher Cazenove, Barry Cryer and Angela Rippon.

The revue boasts direction by Hannah Chissick and musical staging by Adam Cooper, who was Tony-nominated for his work in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake.

With original narration written by Ned Sherrin, the creative team also included Michael Haslam (musical supervision), Bob Bailey (design) and Robert A. Jones (lighting design). Side by Side by Sondheim features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim with additional music by Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers and Jule Styne. After a successful U.K. run, the revue played Broadway's Music Box Theatre April 1977-February 1978 before transferring to the Morosco Theatre, where it played through March 1978. The original Broadway cast included David Kernan, Millicent Martin, Julia McKenzie and Ned Sherrin.
