Classic Arts News Mahagonny East: Kurt Weill's Fable Opens at Opera Boston Those of us in the Northeast who think it's totally unfair that Madame Begbick and her pals have set up their metropolis of pleasure all the way out in L.A. finally get our turn this weekend — Opera Boston presents Kurt Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny starting tonight at the Cutler Majestic Theatre.
Joyce Castle stars as Leocadia Begbick, with Amy Burton as the enterprising sex worker (yes, that's what we call them now) Jenny Smith. Dan Snyder plays Jimmy MacIntyre, with Stephen Salters as Bank Account Bill, Philip Lima as Trinity Moses, Frank Kelley as Fatty the Bookkeeper, Matthew DiBattista as Jack O'Brien, and Tom O'Toole as Alaska Wolf Joe. Opera Boston artistic director Gil Rose conducts, and the production is directed by Sam Helfrich.

The performances tonight and Sunday afternoon (February 25) are sold out (though you can stop by the Majestic to check for last-minute returns). Tickets for Tuesday night's performance (February 27), as well as info about the show, are available at www.operaboston.org/mahagonny.
