Classic Arts News Miami School Wins Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington Competition An ensemble from Miami's New World School of the Arts won Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington high school jazz-band competition this weekend, JALC announced.
Roosevelt High School Jazz Band and Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz Ensemble, both from the Seattle area, finished second and third. All three winning groups performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and artistic director Wynton Marsalis at a concert on May 15.

The Shorewood High School Jazz Band, also from Seattle, was given an honorable mention.

The judges for the competition included Marsalis, composer Gunther Schuller, conductor David Baker, and conductor David Berger.

This year's competition marked the tenth Essentially Ellington Competition and the first time that the event has been held at JALC's new Frederick P. Rose Hall.
