Artistic director Rick Lombardo directs the musical by lyricist-librettist Steven Sater and composer Duncan Sheik. The show earned 2007 Tonys for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. Choreography is by Sonya Tayeh of TV's "So You Think You Can Dance."
The California production is part of a formal alliance between San Jose Repertory Theatre and San Jose State University (SJSU), providing students with access to professional instruction and experience in the theatre. The run continues to Sept. 25.
The Adult characters in the musical based on Frank Wedekind's 19th-century expressionistic play about sexual awakening in teenagers are played by Todd Alan Johnson and Cindy Goldfield.
Cervantes recently appeared in Broadway's American Idiot and in Off-Broadway's Happiness; Murman played multiple roles in the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Spring Awakening; Hite recently received a Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award nomination for his work as Mike in Berkeley Rep's Girlfriend; Johnson has performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, and on national tours; Goldfield is part of the cabaret collaboration of Goldfield & Koldewyn and is a two-time recipient of both the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle and the Dean Goodman Choice awards.
