The premiere of Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp’s Movin’ Out started previews March 28 at London’s Victoria Apollo, while director John (Sweeney Todd) Doyle’s revival of Mack and Mabel has been previewing at the Criterion Theatre since April 5. The double opening is the result of the producers of Movin’ Out bringing forward the European premiere of the musical by a week. The London run however, is still due to end July 17 before commencing a European tour.
In Movin’ Out, joining British performer James Fox, who takes on the role of Piano Man, are Holly Cruikshank (Contact, Fosse, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum), Ron Todorowski (Footloose, Copacabana, The Wild Party) and David Gomez (Contact), all of whom were in the Broadway version of the musical.
As with Doyle’s chamber version of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, Mack and Mabel features a cast of actor musicians. David Soul and Janie Dee star in the title roles of the Jerry Herman (music and Lyrics) and Michael Stewart (book) musical.
