News Murder Takes Time and Finesse; Hartford Stage Delays Musical Launch By One Day Launching a new musical is complicated. In order to allow for the sharpening of the technical aspects of the world-premiere production of the musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, starring Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays, Hartford Stage is moving its first preview to Oct. 12 rather than Oct. 11. Opening night remains Oct. 19. The nimble Broadway star of I Am My Own Wife, Pygmalion, The Best Man and Journey's End plays eight roles in the new show.

"Due to the technical complexities of a large musical, Hartford Stage artistic director Darko Tresnjak has decided to cancel the first preview of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder," according to an Oct. 10 statement. "The first preview will now be at 8 PM, Friday, Oct. 12."

Set in the elegant Edwardian era, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder "traces the brilliant trajectory of Monty Navarro — a charmer, seducer and avenger — on his quest for recognition and family fortune," according to Hartford Stage. Expect "a delightful evening of music, merriment…and murder."

Broadway actor Mays won the Best Actor Tony Award for his solo turn in I Am My Own Wife.

A Gentleman's Guide has book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman, music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak. Tresnjak directs.

Performances continue to Nov. 11. The cast of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder will also include Heather Ayers (Broadway's A Little Night Music and Young Frankenstein) as Evangeline Barley, Lady Eugena; Ken Barnett (Broadway's Wonderful Town and The Green Bird) as Monty; Rachel Izen (Broadway's Mary Poppins) as Miss Marietta Shingle, Tour Guide; Chilina Kennedy (Broadway's Jesus Christ Superstar) as Phoebe; Lisa O'Hare (My Fair Lady U.S. tour) as Sibella Hallward; Kendal Sparks (The MUNY's The Producers and Les Misérables) as Farmer, Magistrate, Warden; and Price Waldman (Goodspeed's Sweeney Todd) as Barber, Detective. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is produced in association with The Old Globe in San Diego.
