The musical, the longest-running show in the York's 35-year history, began previews at Dodger Stages, Stage Five, Feb. 2. Featuring music by Eric Rockwell, lyrics by Joanne Bogart and a book by Rockwell and Bogart, The Musical of Musicals is a satire of various musical theatre genres. One story is played five times, each in the style of a different musical theatre composer or team, including Rodgers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim. Producers are the York Theatre Company, Melanie Herman, W. David McCoy and James Morgan.
Directed and choreographed by Pamela Hunt, the show's original cast has returned for the Dodgers run, including Craig Fols, Lovette George and authors Rockwell and Bogart. The design team comprises Mary Jo Dondlinger (lighting), John Carver Sullivan (costumes) and Morgan (set design).
About the show's reopening, producer Melanie Herman recently said in a statement, "I’m pleased to have found a permanent home for Musicals. Audiences have been begging us to bring the show back; in fact, many audience members returned multiple times to see it. We are thrilled that the show will now reach the audience it deserves, and are looking forward to a wonderful run at the Dodger Stages."
The Musical of Musicals — The Musical! was nominated for a 2004 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, and the CD is available in stores on the Jay Records label.
Dodger Stages is located at 340 West 50th Street. Tickets, priced $55-$59.50, are available by callling (212) 239-6200.
