Neil Simon's gentle family comedy, Proposals, will close Jan. 11 after 11 previews and 76 regular performances at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre.
It's one of the shortest runs ever for a Neil Simon play on Broadway. Only Fools (1981) had a shorter run, with 40 performances. Other short runs for the otherwise veteran hitmaker: 119 for God's Favorite in 1974, 193 for The Gingerbread Lady in 1970, 208 for The Good Doctor in 1973, and 245 for Jake's Women in 1994.
Simon won the Pulitzer Prize and Best Play Tony Award for Lost in Yonkers and the Best Play Tony for Biloxi Blues. He also won Best Author (Dramatic) for The Odd Couple.
Directed by Joe Mantello, Proposals stars Dick Latessa, Kelly Bishop, Katie Finneran and L. Scott Caldwell. The play tells the story of an elderly divorced man, his daughter and his housekeeper, all of whom find romance, or something like it, at a Pocono country house, when guests arrive -- some of them unexpected.
