Mark Brokaw directed the American premiere of the Elyot work at Theatre Row's Acorn Theater. Previews began Oct. 22, and the show officially opened Nov. 6. The cast features Christopher Abbott (Good Boys and True), David Cale (Two Thousand Years), Lisa Emery (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Darren Goldstein (Guttenberg! The Musical), Elizabeth Jasicki (Abigail's Party), Andrew Polk (The Accomplices) and Richard Topol (Awake and Sing).
Elyot's Mouth to Mouth concerns "Frank, a gay writer living with AIDS, [who] attends a party at his friend Laura's house to celebrate the return of her teenage son from abroad," according to show notes. "As the story shifts back and forth through time, it's clear that Frank may have played an unscrupulous part in the unraveling of his best girlfriend's family."
The work debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in 2001 and earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best New Play and a London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play.
The design team included Riccardo Hernandez (set), Michael Krass (costume), Mark McCullough (lighting) and David Van Tieghem (sound) — who also provided original music for the production.
The New Group season continues with a revival of Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra, featuring Lili Taylor and Jena Malone (Jan. 13-March 7, 2009), and Seth Zvi Rosenfeld's Handball (previews begin April 27, 2009).
