Classic Arts News New York's New Victory Theater to Present Sendak-Kushner Brundibšr in 2006 Tony Kushner and Maurice Sendak's version of the Hans Kršsa children's opera Brundibšr will be seen at New York's New Victory Theater in spring 2006.
The production, which is paired with Bohuslav Martinu's Comedy on the Bridge, will premiere at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in November and December. Tony Taccone, artistic director of Berkeley Rep and the original director of Kushner's Angels in America, will direct.

The double bill will run April 28-May 21, 2006, at the New Victory.

Kršsa wrote Brundibšr, an allegorical tale of children resisting a bullying organ grinder, in 1938. In the early 1940s, while a prisoner in the Nazi "model ghetto" of Terez‹n (Theresienstadt), he re-orchestrated the work (the score had been lost), and it was performed there 55 times.

The opera has been performed with increasing frequency in the last ten years. The Kushner-Sendak version, with an English-language libretto by Kushner and designs by Sendak, premiered at Chicago Opera Theater in 2003.
